Winter Thesis Statement

Humans are an invasive species

Like wildflowers, we spread ourselves out, any and everywhere

planting ourselves in locations that not everyone will accept

Our drive to push past this is what makes us unique,

we naturally create

we naturally destroy

After moving to Toronto and noticing the vast amount of graffiti art in the streets, I began to also notice the pieces that had been obscured, by being covered up or removed. The stark, clean slate appearance that these walls are attempting to achieve has continued to hold my interest. Initially, I viewed this “suppression of creativity” as negative and unfair, and as time has gone by, my thoughts on the topic have changed. The concept of impermanence, expression and suppression within our communities, and the relationship between the two is something that I have felt the need to explore and express.

I am displaying images of graffiti interactions, some that shed light on a particular point of view or dynamic, and some that will be creatively manipulated by me, using a variety of mediums to draw attention to the layers of time, and the visual interest.
